Mazza Cricket Coach
Have you just started out coaching? Are you recently qualified?
Below are a few tips that might be useful to you. Good luck!
When I started out, I had to learn a lot through trial and error. I started this blog, to hopefully help other coaches have a smoother early journey.
Some rules to love by:
- KEEP LEARNING: Improvement comes from getting stuck in, trying things out…and learning from the odd error. 10 years from now you might cringe at an activity you ran, or something you sued to say. But that’s an inevitable part of the journey.
- STEAL FROM OTHERS: Stealing is right!! Some of the activities here are my own inventions. But many are adaptations of other coaches’ good ideas. A few are copied outright (I’ve tried to give credit to them!). Good coaches share.
- THERE WILL BE GOOD DAYS AND BAD DAYS: Try not to get carried away with either. You can’t solve every problem. There are many factors that influence a child’s behaviour and how quickly they learn.
- TAKE YOUR TIME: There will usually be another week to add another point. Try and get 1 or 2 things nailed each session.
- KEEP PERSPECTIVE: 99.9% of these children aren’t going to “make it”.
That DOES NOT mean that you stop being ambitious with them.
It DOES NOT mean you never push them.
But remember that your main job is to enhance their love of the game. If they don’t love it…what’s the point in being successful at it anyway!
